What is IPL?
IPL or Intense Pulsed Light therapy has been used in dermatology for several decades to treat a variety of skin conditions including facial rosacea, vascular and pigmented skin lesions-as well as for skin rejuvenation. Scientific evidence suggests that IPL stimulates fibroblast activity in the skin. These cells produce new collagen which is thought to be responsible for skin tightening and rejuvenation.
How does IPL work in treating dry eye?
IPL has been shown to be extremely effective in managing meibomian gland dysfunction, dry eye and ocular forms of rosacea. IPL is a non-invasive light-based therapy that targets inflammation and blepharitis, the root cause of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction. In fact, 85% of patients with dry eye have meibomian gland dysfunction.
What are the skin benefits?
IPL improves skin discoloration, including sun damage and hyper-pigmentation. It also improves redness, stimulates collagen production which improves the skin’s texture making it more smooth, reduces pore size, and minimizes fine lines & wrinkles. IPL is also highly effective for patients with rosacea.
How many sessions will I need?
Treatment is accomplished in 4 sessions scheduled approximately 2 to 4 weeks apart. IPL is applied to the skin surrounding the eyes which are protected by special shields. Sessions last about 10 minutes. Maintenance treatments are recommended 1-2x per year. For some patients, the greatest benefits occur when IPL is combined with in office procedures such as Thermal Meibomian gland expression.
What should I expect after having an IPL treatment?
The skin may appear red with mild swelling and have a sunburn-like sensation that usually lasts for 4-8 hours but can last up to 72 hours.
Results are usually seen by the second or third treatment and have been extremely impressive for the majority of patients. Many patients report dramatically improved comfort and often can resume contact lens wear after treatment.
What is the cost?
The cost includes four full face treatments along with gentle meibomian gland expression (if needed). Individual sessions are recommended on an as-needed basis for maintenance.
Can I use my FSA/HSA for this?
Yes, you can!
How do I know if I need IPL?
Although IPL is wonderful, not everyone is a candidate for IPL. We are happy to see you for a consultation to determine if this is right for you.
